Customize Coupon Settings
Create better discounts
In a previous article, I showed you how to place a new or existing discount coupon inside a campaign message. Each coupon comes with default settings that make it easy for customers to apply a code at the checkout and protect store owners (from customers who might overuse the discounts).
This article shows you how to override those default settings and create a coupon code that more closely matches your own business interests.
This guide provides an über brief overview of Shopify's discount options. If you're the kind of person who likes getting their hands dirty in the nitty-gritty details, please check out these Shopify help pages.
Go to the Shopify Discounts page.
Note these are not global settings. You need to customize the settings for each coupon.
You can update the percentage of the discount or change the value to a fixed amount (e.g. $5.00). If you opt for a fixed amount, make sure you set a minimum purchase requirement (see below), otherwise, the discount could be larger than the purchase price.
The tinyAlbert default setting is for one-time purchases. You can choose just subscriptions or both.
The default setting is no minimum requirement. You can set a minimum purchase amount (e.g. $100) or require a minimum number of products at the checkout.
The default setting is All customers. Unless you want to target a specific segment or set of customers, this is the best option.
If you select a different option (i.e. Specific customer segments or Specific customers), the contacts who subscribed to your tinyAlbert audience but aren't Shopify customers won't be able to use the code.
The default setting is one use per customer. You can change that by setting a limit on the total number of uses. Or, you can enable both options.
The default setting is no discount combinations. You can change that setting, but do take care. You might end up offering a surprisingly robust discount.
By default, tinyAlbert coupon codes do not have an expiry date. You can change that. Check the Set end date box and use the calendar icon to set the expiration date and time.
If you plan on testing the updated tinyAlbert coupon code, make sure the Start date and time are set for your current date and time. If the start date is in the future, the code won't work during your test.
After you complete the customizations, go to the top of the page. The Summary panel shows the coupon code details.
To test the new settings, go back to tinyAlbert.
Go to the test email account, open the message, and click SHOP NOW. The store opens in a new browser tab.
Experiment at the checkout to test the customizations. In the example below, the checkout displays an error message (as expected) because the total value does not meet the purchase minimum (which I set to $50).
That's it.
Now you know how to customize tinyAlbert coupon code settings on Shopify's Discounts page.
